Package deal or not for Aurora?

Hi,
I was thinking to just get the cheapest and clean hotel room and rent a car. But are there any concerns about clothing (how much do I really need?) or road conditions (I grew up in cold area in the USA, but not quite as cold as YK). What other adventures should we be sure not to miss? Is YK the best place to go, even?
